Joyful Heart Foundation, Non-Profit Organizations and Government Agencies Launch Hawai‘i Says NO MOR

HONOLULU, Hawai‘i – Two years ago, the Joyful Heart Foundation joined 14 of Hawai‘i’s leading government and non-profit organizations to launch Hawai‘i Says NO MORE, a collaboration of individuals, programs, and organizations around Hawaiʻi who are taking action to increase awareness and visibility to prevent and end domestic violence and sexual assault.

Since then, Hawai‘i Says NO MORE has raised awareness about this violence across the state and encouraged public discussions to break the silence, shame, and stigma surrounding these issues. As Rick Blangiardi, General Manager of Hawai‘i News Now and one of the 23 participants in the Hawai‘i Says NO MORE PSA campaign, said regarding our responsibility to end this violence in Hawai‘i, “Hawaiʻi Says NO MORE is about men engaging men. About role models standing up. About bringing young people into this conversation, early and often. It is time for all of us to step up–to find organizations to support, to support a family member or friend in need—and to be brave.”

Joyful Heart Foundation, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, Child and Family Service, Hawai‘i State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women, Hawai‘i Youth Service Network, Parents and Children Together, Department of the Attorney General, Department of Human Services, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Health and Wellness, the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Office of Gender Equity, the University of Hawai‘i System: Office of Institutional Equity, Windward Spouse Abuse Shelter, Women Helping Women, and YWCA Oahu are the leading organizations behind Hawai‘i Says NO MORE. “Hawai‘i Says NO MORE challenges the attitudes and behaviors that lead to this violence while promoting local values that reflect aloha, respect and our connections through ‘ohana. Hawai‘i Says NO MORE is a commitment, a vision, a line drawn—and most of all, a call to action.” said Maile Zambuto, National Chief Executive Officer of Joyful Heart Foundation.

Businesses including AdWalls Hawai‘i, Bloomingdale's, Hagadone Printing, Kapolei Commons, Kobayashi Group, MacNaughton Group, Regal Theaters, and Wall-to-Wall Studios have also provided generous support to help raise visibility during Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week.

Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week, which runs March 5-12, includes efforts and events across the state. In honor of Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week, Honolulu Hale and the IBM building will light their respective buildings the NO MORE blue color all week. As Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has said: "It’s about all of us coming together as one community to say this type of violence has got to stop."

Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Governor David Ige, Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., Mayor Harry Kim, and Mayor Alan M. Arakawa have all formally proclaimed March 5-12 as Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week; United States Senator Brian Schatz, United States Representative Tulsi Gabbard, and Maui County Council will sign a letter of recognition; and the County of Kauai Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will act as a Hawai‘i Says NO MORE magnet distribution point.
